Lead Low Voltage Technician

VBTRONICS is seeking an experienced, dependable, and hands-on Lead Low Voltage Technician to join our growing technical team. We are looking for someone who can take ownership of commercial low-voltage installations, lead jobs in the field, troubleshoot problems, and complete projects professionally from start to finish.

The ideal candidate has strong experience with low-voltage cabling, voice and data, network wiring, security surveillance, access control, intercom, and electronic systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, terminate, test, label, and troubleshoot Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A and other low-voltage cabling.
• Install and service IP security surveillance cameras and CCTV systems.
• Install door access control systems, including readers, controllers, request-to-exit devices, door contacts, electric strikes, maglocks, and associated cabling.
• Install and troubleshoot intercom and video intercom systems.
• Install and service intrusion/security systems.
• Assist with installation and deployment of solar-powered/off-grid surveillance camera systems.
• Install and organize network racks, patch panels, switches, UPS systems, cable management, and related equipment.
• Install wall-mounted TVs, monitors, displays, cameras, and other electronic equipment.
• Perform network cabling, device connections, basic IP configuration, and connectivity troubleshooting.
• Read floor plans, drawings, wiring diagrams, and project scopes.
• Determine cable routes and perform professional cable management.
• Work above ceilings and in commercial environments.
• Use ladders and lifts safely when required.
• Test completed cabling and equipment before project turnover.
• Label and document cables, devices, racks, and installed equipment.
• Troubleshoot installation problems independently.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and professional jobsite.
• Communicate project progress, issues, material requirements, and delays to management.
• Coordinate with customers, project managers, engineers, electricians, general contractors, and other trades.
• Guide and supervise other technicians or helpers when assigned.
• Ensure installations meet VBTRONICS quality standards and applicable low-voltage requirements.

Lead Technician Responsibilities

This is not only an installer position. The Lead Technician should be capable of taking responsibility for the field portion of a project.

The successful candidate should be able to review the scope of work, plan the day’s activities, identify required materials and tools, assign work to other technicians, monitor installation quality, troubleshoot field issues, and communicate clearly with the office and engineering team.

The Lead Technician will be expected to help keep projects on schedule, organized, properly documented, and professionally completed.

Required Qualifications

• Previous professional experience in low-voltage installation.
• Strong knowledge of voice/data cabling and network wiring.
• Experience installing IP cameras and security surveillance equipment.
• Experience with access control, intercom, or security systems.
• Good understanding of electronics, networking, IP addresses, switches, PoE, and basic network troubleshooting.
• Ability to terminate and test RJ45/network cabling.
• Ability to install and organize network racks and patch panels.
• Comfortable using drills, testers, hand tools, power tools, ladders, and other installation equipment.
• Ability to troubleshoot problems rather than only follow installation instructions.
• Ability to work independently and lead other technicians when necessary.
• Good communication and customer-service skills.
• Professional appearance and attitude.
• Ability to keep accurate job documentation.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Reliable vehicle for jobsite travel.
• Must have own basic technician hand tools.
• Must be dependable and able to arrive at jobsites on time.

Preferred Experience

Additional consideration will be given to candidates with experience in:

• Fiber-optic cabling, termination, or splicing.
• Commercial access control.
• Intrusion alarm systems.
• IP video surveillance/VMS systems.
• Wireless networking and point-to-point wireless.
• Network switches, VLANs, PoE, and IP troubleshooting.
• Conduit installation.
• Door hardware and electric locking devices.
• Solar/off-grid surveillance systems.
• Scissor lifts and boom lifts.
• Commercial construction environments.

Travel Requirements

This position requires regular travel to customer and project locations, primarily throughout the Chicagoland area and generally within approximately a 100-mile radius of our Rolling Meadows office.

Occasional longer-distance or out-of-town projects may be available depending on business needs.

Physical Requirements

Candidates should be comfortable performing hands-on field work, including climbing ladders, working above ceilings, pulling cable, lifting and carrying equipment, using power tools, working in network/IT closets, and working at commercial construction sites.

Compensation

Pay is based on experience, technical knowledge, leadership ability, and demonstrated skill level.

Compensation will be discussed with qualified candidates based on their experience with low-voltage cabling, networking, surveillance, access control, intercom, security systems, troubleshooting, and ability to independently lead projects.
